Vasquez, a young Parks and Recreation Aide with the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Department, lost his life in the line of duty, a heartbreaking end to a life full of promise and service. New York State Police are investigating the circumstances of his death.
Known as a rising star in his community, Dariel was a former Ramapo High School baseball player with dreams and talents that reached beyond the field.
A GoFundMe launched following his death remembers him as a "young man full of promise and dedication.
"Born into a family known for community service, Dariel embraced this legacy wholeheartedly," the campaign says. "He was not only an admired figure in his community but a guiding light for his family. A Ramapo High School senior and captain of the baseball team, he was a leader among his peers, inspiring others with his compassion, perseverance, and respect for all.
"He had big dreams for the future, with plans to begin college this coming January, a journey he approached with the same dedication he brought to every role in his life."
One of Dariel's coworkers recalled working alongside him the day that he died:
Assemblyman Karl Brabenec paid tribute to Vasquez’s spirit, stating, “Today, our community mourns the tragic loss of Dariel Vasquez, a dedicated New York State Parks worker and Ramapo High School baseball star, who gave his life battling the Jennings Creek Wildfire. His bravery and commitment to protecting our community will never be forgotten.”
The assemblyman visited the Greenwood Lake Fire Department to personally thank the firefighters who continue to battle the flames and to extend condolences on behalf of a grieving community. “Let us all keep Dariel, his family, and all those on the front lines in our thoughts during this difficult time,” Brabenec urged, reminding residents to honor Dariel’s sacrifice and the courage he showed in his final moments.
As of Monday, Nov. 11, the Jennings Creek Wildfire had spread to 3,000 acres with 10% containment, the NJ Forest Fire Service said.
A GoFundMe for Dariel's family had raised more than $51,000 as of press time.
